No, this is not a headline from The Onion.

It is actual news from the Great Falls Tribune (Montana):

A “quick draw” competition between friends sent one man to the hospital Sunday night after his opponent forgot that his gun was loaded, according to criminal charges filed Monday.

Henry Haviland, 23, was in serious but stable condition at Benefis Healthcare on Monday evening.

Zachary Enloe, 20, was in jail on a felony charge of criminal endangerment.

Police responded to a call at about 9 p.m. Sunday from an apartment at 4120 3rd Ave. S. The caller said he had accidentally shot his friend. When officers arrived, they found Haviland lying in the alley behind the apartment with a gunshot wound to his face.

In the charge filed against Enloe in Cascade County District Court, prosecutors gave their account of what they believe led up to the shooting.

Enloe was visiting Haviland on Sunday afternoon at the apartment where Haviland’s girlfriend lives. Both men had handguns; Enloe was armed with a 9mm pistol and Haviland’s was a .45 caliber. The two were drawing the unloaded weapons and “dry-firing” at each other, prosecutors charge.

At about 7 p.m., Haviland and his girlfriend went to Wal-Mart, and Enloe left the apartment separately, according to the charges.

Around 9 p.m., the three met up at the apartment again. Enloe sat in the living room, while Haviland stood in the same room and dry-fired his unloaded gun into the fireplace. Haviland then pointed the gun at Enloe and pulled the trigger, according to court documents.

Prosecutors say Enloe jumped out of his chair, pulled his own gun from a holster, and shot Haviland in the jaw.

Enloe had forgotten that he loaded the gun since the two had last pretended to shoot each other, prosecutors said. Haviland made his way outside, where he collapsed in the alley, and Enloe called 9-1-1.

Lucky for all of us, they were apparently “law-abiding gun owners.” Otherwise we might have cause for concern.

Oh, right….

Another example of Brady background checks at work, this time in Pennsylvania.

Per the AP:

NORRISTOWN, Pa. - Authorities say former NBA player Aaron McKie tried to buy two guns despite being under a protection-from-abuse order.

Montgomery County District Attorney Risa Ferman says McKie failed to disclose the protection order when he applied to buy the guns in April.

She says McKie never got the guns because of the order. It was filed in Delaware County last year and is in effect until September.

PhotoAmong other outlets, reported by Reuters:

NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. rapper 50 Cent was ordered to surrender any guns he might have after a judge on Friday issued a temporary restraining order requested by the rapper’s ex-girlfriend, lawyers said.

A lawyer for the rapper, whose real name is Curtis Jackson, said he would contest the order and that 50 Cent did not have guns or access to guns. “To my knowledge, he has no guns,” said lawyer Brett Kimmel.

Details are few at this time.

Per KNXV ABC-15 (Phoenix):

A teenage boy was shot when a gun accidentally discharged at a Phoenix home on Friday.

Two 15-year-olds were playing with the gun at a home near Encanto and 89th Avenue.

When one 15-year-old was handling the gun it accidentally discharged hitting the other boy in ankle.

The victim was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

His condition is unknown at this time.

Did anyone know whether Tony Klaseus drank, smoked marijuana and hunted at the same time before this horrible event?

Did anyone speak up before he took his son turkey hunting?

When did Mr. Klaseus stop being a “law-abiding gun owner”? Was it on or before April 19?

KARE NBC-11 (Minneapolis/St. Paul) has today’s story:

A Belle Plaine man pleaded guilty Thursday to manslaughter in connection with the shooting death of his own son.

In return, authorities dropped several other charges against 40 year old Tony Klaseus.

His 8 year old son Hunter died April 19 when he was hit by a shotgun blast from his father’s gun. The two were hunting turkeys.

Klaseus had told his son to stay put after they spotted turkeys, and Klaseus tried to circle around to get a shot. The boy did not stay where his father told him to, and when Klaseus fired, the shot hit his son. The boy was wearing camoflage.

Authorities filed charges after finding alcohol and marijuana in Klaseus’ system. His blood alcohol level measured .06. They also found several empty beer cans and marijuana paraphenalia in his pickup.

A judge will sentence Klaseus in August.
