Since 1989, Legal Action Project (LAP) attorneys have represented victims of gun violence pro bono in courts throughout the country, establishing the principle that those who manufacture, distribute and sell guns owe a duty to engage in their business responsibly, and may be liable when they violate that duty. The Legal Action Project has a long history of working closely with the legal community.
LAP, with the assistance of members of the legal community, has won precedent-setting rulings in courts throughout the nation. LAP attorneys have also been instrumental in defeating gun lobby lawsuits seeking to overturn lifesaving gun laws in the courts.
LAP provides a full range of free assistance to government attorneys defending gun laws against lawsuits brought by the gun lobby. LAP also files key amicus curiae ("friend of the court") briefs in gun related cases. We also pursue legal remedies against government officials who fail to carry out their duty to enforce life-saving gun laws.
