Brady Campaign Garners Major Media Coverage, Providing Analysis of Supreme Court Decision
Brady Campaign staff and activists have appeared on the air, and in extensive print and online media before and after the Supreme Court's decision. Here is sample of the coverage:
from the Los Angeles Times:
"'While we disagree with the Supreme Court's ruling, which strips the citizens of the District of Columbia of a law they strongly support, the decision clearly suggests that other gun laws are entirely consistent with the Constitution,' said Paul Helmke, president of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence."
from The Washington Post:
"With yesterday's decision, the Supreme Court pushed the gun issue back to the forefront of the nation's agenda, opening a new chapter in what has been one of the most contentious and divisive debates in American politics for the past four decades.... Several analysts noted that the court found a balance about where public opinion rests: backing the right to own guns but also supporting some restrictions. "The ruling has taken away the two extremes of the debate," said Paul Helmke, president of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence. 'This has been a wedge issue for years, and I think they've taken away the wedge.'"
from USA Today Online:
"Paul Helmke of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence says 'this opinion still allows commonsense gun control laws, restrictions to make us all safer.' He expects to see more challenges to existing restrictions on gun ownership."
from The Washington Times:
"Paul Helmke, president of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, which fought in support of the city's handgun ban, predicted that the decision would "embolden criminal defendants, and ideological extremists, to file new legal attacks on existing gun laws. With the help of the Brady Center's legal team, those attacks can, and must, be successfully resisted in the interest of public safety,' he said."
from The Wall Street Journal:
"One gun opponent, Paul Helmke, president of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Handgun Violence, tells The Wall Street Journal there could be a silver lining: the possibility that gun-rights advocates will feel less threatened and be more open to compromise."
from syndicated and Washington Post columnist E. J. Dionne:
"While criticizing the court majority, Paul Helmke, president of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, argued that the majority decision at least 'permits restrictions on place, on types of weapons, on conditions of sale and on carrying concealed weapons.' The decision, he said in an interview, will make gun control less of a "wedge issue" by refuting the claim of gun control opponents that any restrictions on weapons lead down "a slippery slope to gun confiscation. I hope Helmke is right."
