Brady-Endorsed California Candidates Big Winners!

On Election Day Californians sent a clear message that they wanted change not only for their nation but for their state as well. All but one of the 19 Brady-endorsed candidates running for the state legislature won their races.

The California Brady Chapters look forward to working with these candidates in the new legislative term on sensible and responsible gun laws.

The Brady Campaign has issued an in-depth report called "Guns & The 2008 Elections: Common Sense Gun Laws Won, The NRA Lost, & What it Means."

New Brochure: A Gun in the Home is a Danger to Your Family

Did you know that a gun in the home is actually a risk to your family? A gun in the home is 22 times more likely to be used in a homicide, suicide or accidental shooting than to kill in self-defense!

Every day in America children are accidently killed when they find the family gun. Every day in America depressed teenagers, seniors, and other family members commit suicide with the family gun. Every day in America someone is killed with the family gun in a domestic violence incident.

If you don't own a gun, think twice before bringing one into your home for the purpose of self-defense. If you do own a gun, the best way to reduce gun risks is to remove the gun from your home. YOU CAN HELP SAVE LIVES by downloading and sharing or e-mailing this important brochure from the California Brady Campaign Chapters with your family, neighbors and friends! (download brochure here)

Chapters Will Continue to Fight for Owner-Authorized Handguns and Ammunition Regulations in 2009

Our two priority gun violence prevention bills did not make it out of the Senate Appropriations Committee this term. The State of California is faced with a fiscal crisis, and very few bills, especially those with any fiscal implications, cleared the Senate this year.

The two measures were: AB 2062 (DeLeon) which would require handgun ammunition sellers to obtain a state license to operate and would require new regulations to ensure sellers of handgun ammunition are legitimate, regulated businesses; and, AB 2235 (DeSaulnier), which would require all newly manufactured or imported handguns in California to be "owner-authorized", or personalized in a way that would allow them to be fired only by authorized persons.

Both authors are committed to continuing to work on these efforts. In the meantime, we will continue to educate the public and solicit support from organizations.

We sincerely THANK everyone who sent letters, e-mails and/or made calls in support of these two bills, and look forward to working with you again next year!

Brady Scorecard Shows California Has Nation's Strongest Gun Laws
California earned 79 points out of a total of 100

Earlier this year, the Brady Campaign released scorecards rating the gun laws of every state in the country. California has the nation's strongest laws to keep criminals and other dangerous people from easily obtaining guns — but it is not a perfect score and there is more that needs to be done! Click here to see the California scorecard.

A Note of Welcome

Welcome to the online home of the California Chapters of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence!

I write this welcome note at Thanksgiving, 2008, a time when we, at the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, have much to be thankful for. In the November election, Brady-endorsed candidates, from President-Elect Obama down to state legislators across the U.S., won stunning election victories.

Public opinion polls tell us that U.S. citizens strongly support common sense gun laws. Two-thirds of a recent public opinion sample agreed that new gun laws should be adopted in the first year of the Obama-Biden Administration.

In California, we have 20 local chapters of the Brady Campaign to work on state and federal legislation. Our goal is to keep dangerous weapons out of the hands of dangerous people. Every day in the U.S. 80 people lose their lives to gun violence; 8 of them are children. That must change.

Our California Brady Chapters educate the public, partner with law enforcement, provide support to victims of gun violence, and take local action to make our communities safer.

We invite you to join us. You may want to become a member of one of our 20 chapters, form a chapter in your own community, be part of our email information network, or make a donation to the Brady Campaign. Whatever contribution you wish to make, your participation is welcome. Please contact us. We will direct you to members of our organization working in your own area.

Together, let's make the coming years a time when gun violence decreases dramatically and our communities in California become healthier and safer.

Warm Regards,
Ellen Boneparth, President
